After taking in our anchor, we cruised upstream to Kingston, NY. Enroute we passed Dunderberg Mountain, said to be the home of a Dutch goblin who controls the summer storms. A few miles further is Bear Mountain with its bridge. When built in 1924, it was the world's largest suspension bridge.
Later we passed West Point, the US Military Academy. Some of our best known generals and a number of presidents graduated from this school. While passing the grounds, we saw some of the rigorous training - jumping into the water from a helicopter.
A few miles further is Banner-man's Island with the remains of a medieval castle. Between 1900 and 1918 Frank Bannerman, a munition dealer, built a replica of a castle. The castle became state property in 1967 and burned down in 1969. Only some of the outer walls remain.
